The beginning of a puppy’s life is by far the most important time in his furry life. Things you do or don’t do now will have a life-long impact on your pup’s behavior, and could be the difference between whether he stays with you forever or dies in a shelter. A sad statistic is that about 25% of people who get a puppy will give him up before he reaches one year of age. Hard to believe, but painfully true.
The worst part about this is that it’s pretty easy to ensure that your puppy grows into a great adult dog, that you would never consider living without. You just need to do the right things now. Dogs are made or broken during the first six months of their lives. If you spend a little more time now, spend a little more money now, get a little less sleep now, you’ll have a great dog in no time.
The following two thing should begin the day you bring your new puppy home:
1. House training
2. Socialization
House training is never really fun but if you put in the time now, you will have a trustworthy pup running around your house in no time. If done right, house training shouldn’t take long at all. When I get the call for a six month old puppy or older that isn’t house trained the answer is always lack of the proper method or just plain laziness.
Puppy Socialization is the most important aspect of your puppy’s life.
Socialization is with three things: dogs, people and the human world. This needs to begin NOW, not after all vaccinations are complete. It should be done safely with dogs that we know are healthy who have owners we know are responsible. Basically, I want your dog to have seen it all and done it all by time it is eight months of age – and have every experience be either a positive or a non-event. That way no matter where your life takes you, you can be confident that your dog will be cool with it.
Don’t hesitate for a day with your new puppy. The time to fix behavior problems and help your adult dog is right now when he’s a puppy. Every moment is so important to his development and your life together. If you’ve never had a dog before or this is your first puppy I would highly recommend you do at least one private session and/or attend a puppy kindergarten class. Taking the time now will make all the difference for your new dog.
