Scared Dogs: Helping a Fearful Dog

Scared Dogs: Helping a Fearful Dog

If you have a shy or fearful dog you must be very careful about how you work with him. The common mistake is to try too hard, which always makes the dog more wary.

You have to recognize that to the dog the fear is very real, even though it might seem silly to us. If you push too hard you run the risk of increasing the dog’s fear and making him harder to reach.

The keys to working with a shy or fearful dog are simple.

  1. Make yourself as approachable as possible
  2. Never move into the dogs space – always let him come to you
  3. Let the dog dictate the pace
  4. Use high impact food to reward him for moving forward

I shot this quick video going over the basics of how to work with a fearful dog. In the video I show how I worked with a really nice but shy puppy.

If you like the video, click on over to the youtube page for Scared Dogs: Training a Fearful Dog and leave me a comment there and like the video. You can also subscribe to my youtube channel. I plan on posting videos regularly from now on.

Good luck with all those shy dogs. It takes time to turn them around but they are worth the effort.

Great job showing people how it’s done.  Noticed you were on the dog’s level to begin with, to encourage trust.

@hmacalle Glad you liked it Heidi. I plan on doing a lot more videos in the future.

Hey there would you mind stating which blog platform you’re working with? I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m having a hard time deciding between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design seems different then most blogs and I’m
    looking for something completely unique.
P.S My apologies for getting off-topic but I had to ask!

All my blogs are on WordPress because it is so SEO friendly and customizable. I recommend using (instead of .com) so you can get your own domain. Although there are plenty of free themes I like using some of the paid ones (like this one) because they have more built in options. Hope that helps.
